Porter

The Northampton Housing Authority is seeking a full-time Porter. This is an entry level position. This position is responsible for assisting other maintenance service employees in the preparation of work to be performed including renovation, alteration and maintenance. Lifting is required. Preference will be given to candidate with five (2) years relevant experience in apartment maintenance field. Bilingual in English and dominant language of minority population in community (Spanish) is considered to be an asset in a prospective employee.

The Northampton Housing Authority (NHA) is a quasi-public agency maintaining public housing at the McDonald House, Forsander, Cahill Apartments, Tobin Manor, Salvo House, and Hampshire and Florence Heights. The NHA also administers a Housing Choice Voucher program (Section 8) and works with the Veterans Administration to administer VASH vouchers.
Applicant must possess a driver’s license and high school diploma or GED.

JOB SUMMARY:

This is an entry-level position, as in apprenticeship. Maintains efficient operation and upkeep of the property buildings and grounds in a supportive role. Assists other maintenance employees in unskilled tasks. Assists various trade journeypersons in the preparation of work to be performed; including renovation, alteration, and the maintenance of buildings.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, LICENSE AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combinations of education and experience. Must have a valid driver’s license and insurance.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
